During the waiting period, antipsychotic medications are used, up to the time that Lithium starts working. It is important to note that the available medications are only meant to provide temporary relief from the disorder. They are not meant to treat bipolar. They also have side effects. The severity of the side effects can vary from mild to very serious depending on the tolerance of the person.
